How to promote your music > Music Marketing > Sell Music > Music Promotion > Selling Music Online
Are you familiar with that one : “love your music but can’t buy it right now”
One of my students came to me last year and asked about how his band could get more sales. He was so anxious because they spent so much money and time composing, recording, and after releasing the album they were struggling to get sales.
The problem was not the music, it was a great album, the problem was that they didn’t have a true fan base. Beside friends and local fans gathered on the local scene, they had barely nobody to market the music to. They found out what we all experienced, ‘nobody is looking for you on iTunes’.
I suggested him to build a Soundcloud following as well as a Twitter following strategy. It went great and they started to have lots of views and engagement but nothing much on the sales yet.
We decided to try ‘Permission Email Marketing’, it allows the business to enhance his relationship with its current or previous customers and to encourage loyalty and repeat business.
My team and I worked on a series of emails that were supposed to build trust between them and their new fans before trying to sell the albums. With the use of an autoresponder to deliver each of the email automatically.
The benefit of that is when you do need to announce a new release or a promotion on your catalog, you have built a relationship over a few days, and your subscribers are much less likely to be annoyed.
We came up with a simple idea that marketers use in other industry:
1.) You attract fans on a special page on your website (Squeeze Page)
2.) They enter an email address in exchange for a free mp3
3.) Your autoresponder automatically sends them friendly emails for a few days to grow a relationship and build trust
4.) Your autoresponder automatically sends them some offers to buy your music
5.) BING >>> You've got new sales every day on auto pilot. No kidding
How we did it?
We invented an artist project in a very difficult niche to test the opt-ins and emails and managed to get 890 subscribers within 6 months and generate sales.
We came out with an 8 emails sequence.
It’s not so easy to engage with fans and even more to ask them to buy from you. Well, we want to help you with that problem. We will share with you the followup emails sequence we use for engaging fans and sell music.
These emails work like a charm. That’s because you don’t try to get the sale right away.
The followup is a long sequence of emails that begin with something friendly and engaging. And we are giving them to you just because we want to see you succeed.
Simply fill in the blanks. Then copy and paste the content into your autoresponder. It's that easy.
Nine Inch Nails, Radiohead, Imogen Heap, and others still use email marketing with big success.
I’m not saying you have to do this, I’m just saying you’re missing out if you don’t.
Whether or not you want to be a Rock Star, if you aren’t collecting e-mail addresses of potential fans, then your website is like a a brick wall.
And it doesn’t matter how much people you bring to the wall (i.e. how much traffic you get to your site) if there are no open doors, they’ll stay in front of the wall.
